What is the difference between couples therapy and marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling usually focuses on helping a married couple resolve conflict and improve the relationship: communication, trust, habits, and the daily work of living together. Couples therapy is the wider term, for any two people in a relationship, married or not, who want to understand their patterns and address emotional, communication, or intimacy issues. Both aim to strengthen the relationship. We do both, and we will tell you plainly which one fits what you are describing.

Do we have to be married to come in?

No. We work with engaged couples, dating couples, and couples who are trying to decide whether this relationship has a future. A relationship in trouble deserves attention whether or not there is a ring.

Is this Christian counseling? What if we are not religious?

Our ministry is the Art of Camouflage. We are Christian counselors, and faith shapes how we see people and relationships, but we bring the gospel the way a person can receive it: as good psychology and practical care, not as something to resist. We welcome people of any faith or none. You will not be preached at, and you will not be asked to agree with us to get help. If you want faith to be part of the work, say so and we will make room for it.

What if my partner will not come?

Come anyway. One person can change how a relationship runs, and there is real work you can do on your own. If your partner becomes willing later, we pick up from there.

How long does counseling take?

It depends on what you are carrying and how long it has been there. Some couples come for six to eight sessions around a crisis. Others need longer because the patterns are old. We review progress with you instead of leaving it open ended, and you are free to stop when it has done its job.

What is Deep Origin, and do we need it?

Deep Origin is a Discovery assessment that maps your strengths, communication style, emotional patterns, and relational needs. It is not required. For couples who want a faster, clearer start, it is the most useful hour of preparation we can offer.

Do you take insurance?

We are EAP and in-network providers with a few insurances. Please call to verify if we take the one you have. If we do not, an agreement can sometimes be made on an individual basis. We are also a Military OneSource and TRICARE / TriWest authorized network provider, and we serve veterans regardless of ability to pay.

Do you work with military and veteran couples?

Yes. We are a Military OneSource and TRICARE / TriWest authorized network provider, and we serve veterans regardless of ability to pay. We also work with first responders and their families.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Couples and individuals meet with us online across the United States and around the world. Online work is the same counseling, with the same plan between sessions. Intensives are in person.

What happens at the first appointment?

We ask questions and listen. You tell us what is happening, what you have already tried, and what you want to be different. By the end of the first session you should have a clear sense of what we think is going on and what the next few weeks would look like.

Is it confidential?

Yes. What you say in session stays in session, with the legal exceptions every licensed counselor has: risk of harm to yourself or someone else, and abuse of a child, elder, or dependent adult. We explain those limits before you start.

Do you work with sexual addiction and betrayal?

Yes. Sexual addiction, betrayal trauma, and intimacy anorexia are specialties of this practice. We work with the partner who found out as well as the person acting out, and we do not rush past the damage.

Do you offer groups?

Yes. Groups include Freedom Groups for men recovering from sex addiction, Partner Groups for partners of sex addicts, separate men's and women's Intimacy Anorexia Groups, Married and Alone Groups for women partnered with an intimacy anorexic, and Partner Betrayal Trauma Groups for women healing from infidelity, addiction, or betrayal. Ask about the current schedule when you call.
